Aspect: Nav Rules Drills

The complete International and Inland Navigation Rules, plus the drills the Rules of the Road exam actually tests. Built for mariners preparing for the USCG exam.

📱 iOS · Free 🤖 Android · Free $6.99 unlock

Built around one fact

The Rules of the Road module of the USCG exam is 50 questions, closed book, and needs 90% to pass. Five wrong and you fail.

Aspect is built around that one fact. Read both rule sets in full, learn to recognize every light and shape from any angle, then sit a timed simulation that is weighted like the real exam before you sit the real one.

What you get without paying

The public-domain material stays free. It would be wrong to charge for it.

Both rule sets in full The complete International and Inland Navigation Rules side by side, with every divergence between them flagged, plus the annexes.

Every source named, and checkable

Settings → About names each source with its retrieval date and SHA-256 hash, so the claim can be verified rather than trusted.

The text comes from the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook (corrected 12 August 2024), 33 CFR Subchapter E as amended through 88 FR 37988, and the USCG Amalgamated Navigation Rules. The Rules are a work of the United States Government and are not subject to copyright.

Every illustration, drill, explanation and mnemonic in the app is an original work, drawn from the rule text at run time. That is what makes dark mode, rotation to any aspect and Dynamic Type possible. The sample-exam questions are reproduced from the published papers; where a question needs a diagram, Aspect draws its own.

Aspect stores everything on your device, has no server, collects nothing and works with no network connection. You can export or delete your data from Settings.

A study aid, not your carriage copy. Aspect does not claim to satisfy the requirement in 33 CFR 83.01(g) to carry a copy of the Inland Navigation Rules on board. The Coast Guard’s policy on electronic publications is set out in NVIC 01-16; consult it and carry an approved copy.
