79 kanji, in study order

Readings are set the way a dictionary sets them: on'yomi in katakana, kun'yomi in hiragana, with 〜 marking a reading that only occurs as a prefix or suffix. Each row's example word shows the kanji in use, with its reading above it.

Learning these properly

A list is a reference, not a method. Each of these characters carries three separate things to learn — what it means, how it is read in the words that use it, and how to write it — and they do not arrive at the same speed.

Kanji Trail teaches this exact set that way: meaning, reading and writing are reviewed on separate schedules, each reading is taught in the words that use it, writing is checked stroke by stroke on genkouyoushi squares, and 1,100 real sentences open up as you learn the kanji in them. All 79 JLPT N5 kanji are free, with every word and sentence built from them.

About this list

Where it comes from

The JLPT has published no official kanji list since the exam was restructured in 2010, so every list you will find — including this one — is an estimate assembled from past papers and published word lists. This is the set taught by Kanji Trail: 79 characters for N5, in the order the app introduces them.

Meanings, readings and stroke counts come from KANJIDIC2, and the example words from JMdict, both from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group. Both are used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence, and this table is published under the same licence.
